Asian Emerald Dove
Chalcophaps indica
A pigeon of tropical and subtropical forests, the Asian emerald dove lives across much of Southeast Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.
You’re likely to spot it wandering along the group, either alone or in a small group, searching for fruits and seeds. It’s tame nature might even allow you to come quite close before it pitter-patters away into the dense forest foliage.
An alternative name is the ‘green-winged dove’ and, indeed, the plumage of its wings are a metallic green, each scale-like feather a shimmering emerald overlapping with its neighbours. Undoubtedly beautiful, It’s not the largest of pigeons, however, with an adult measuring about 25 centimetres (10 in) long.
